Is 0.5 mg melatonin enough? Why did 5 or 10 mg leave me groggy?
Why some people go looking for less melatonin, and what a lower amount looks like.

If you have taken a 5 or 10 mg melatonin tablet and spent the next morning moving slowly, you have probably wondered whether you needed that much. It is a question we hear a lot, and a reasonable one to ask.
Why the usual bottle is so strong
Melatonin is a hormone your body makes on its own in the evening, as the light fades. As a supplement it is sold over the counter in the United States, and many of the bottles on store shelves hold 5 or 10 mg per serving. Smaller amounts can take some looking.
More is not always better. A larger amount may stay with you longer, and some people find it carries into the next morning as heaviness or fog. Others notice nothing at all. Bodies differ, bedtimes differ, and there is no single right amount for everyone.
Is half a milligram enough?
For some people, yes. A lower amount is meant to be a small nudge toward your usual evening rhythm rather than a heavy push. People who move down from a strong tablet often say they prefer how the next day feels. We cannot promise how any amount will feel for you, and nobody honest can.
If 0.5 mg does not seem like enough, 1 mg is a modest next step. Going straight back to 5 or 10 mg is not the only option. Your physician can help you decide what makes sense, especially if you take other medication.
How to tell whether it suits you
Look at the morning as much as the night. Did you wake up feeling like yourself? Was it easier to get going? Keep a few lines in a notebook for a couple of weeks: what you took, when you took it, and how the next morning felt. It is a simple way to spot a pattern instead of guessing.
Getting the timing right
When you take melatonin matters as much as how much you take. A few habits help:
- Follow the label. For Light Dose 0.5 mg it reads: "Take 1 tablet 30 to 60 minutes before bed."
- Take it at about the same time each night, so it becomes part of a routine.
- Leave room for a full night in bed. Taking it late, with only a few hours before your alarm, is an easy way to set up a slow morning.
- Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it.
- Do not double up. If one serving does not seem to do much, talk to your physician before taking more than the suggested use.
Or leave melatonin out
Some people find they do not need melatonin at all, just a calmer last hour of the evening. Our melatonin-free blends are made for that. Others keep a low-dose option on hand for occasional sleeplessness, such as a night after travel, and use a blend the rest of the time.
Our low-dose options
Light Dose 0.5 mg is 0.5 mg of melatonin in one tablet. Reset 1 mg is 1 mg of melatonin with chamomile, to help your body settle into a regular bedtime. Low-Dose Melatonin Gummies have 1 mg per gummy. That is the most melatonin in any Bedivo product.
Every amount is printed on the product page, along with suggested use and warnings, so you can compare them before you order.
