How do I build a simple wind-down routine?

A short, repeatable last hour of the evening, and where a supplement fits in it.

A wind-down routine is the stretch between the busy part of your evening and the moment you turn out the light. It does not have to be long or clever. What matters is that it happens most nights, in roughly the same order, so your body starts to recognize it.

Here is a simple version you can bend to fit your life. None of it requires buying anything.

Pick a time and protect it

Choose a lights-out time you can keep on most nights, weekends included if you can manage it. Count back about an hour. That is when your wind-down starts. Set a quiet reminder on your phone if it helps, then put the phone somewhere else.

Lower the lights

Bright overhead lights say it is still the middle of the evening. Switch to a lamp or two, warm and low. If you read in bed, use a small light rather than the ceiling one.

Put the screens down

This is the hardest step for most people, so make it easy on yourself. Charge your phone outside the bedroom, or at least across the room. If your hands want something to do, try a paper book, a crossword, or laying out tomorrow's clothes. Boring is fine. Boring is the point.

Keep the room on your side

A cool, dark, quiet room makes the rest easier. Heavy curtains or a soft sleep mask help with light. A fan can cover the sounds you cannot control. None of this needs to be perfect on the first night; change one thing and see how it feels.

Do one small thing, every night

Pick one or two things you do in the same order each evening:

  • Wash your face and brush your teeth before you are tired, not after.
  • Make a cup of caffeine-free tea.
  • Stretch for a few minutes on the floor.
  • Write tomorrow's to-do list so it is out of your head.

It sounds too small to matter. The repetition is what makes it a routine.

Where a supplement fits

If you take something in the evening, make it part of the routine rather than a last-minute grab. Each of our products gives a suggested time on the label. For Nightly Calm it reads: "Take 2 capsules with water 30 minutes before lights out." The Magnesium Wind-Down Powder is a slower option: "Stir 1 scoop into 8 oz of water and drink about an hour before bed." That makes it a natural first step of the hour.

A supplement can support relaxation as one piece of that hour. It cannot stand in for the rest of it.

When it does not go to plan

Some nights you will get home late, the evening will run long, or you will not feel like any of it. Drop a step and keep the rest. A shorter routine is still a routine. Travel, a late shift, or a busy month can make a tidy evening hard for a while. Keep the one or two steps that still fit, and add the rest back when you can. If occasional sleeplessness starts to feel like most nights, talk to your physician.

Starting small

If you have never taken an evening supplement, the Starter Sampler has 10 nights of each of three melatonin-free products for $29, one-time. Ships free. Try one as part of your new routine, then the next.
